Darkness births light
Maternal mortality in Piura Region seems to be out of control between 2015 second mid-term and 2016 first-term.

By FACTORTIERRA.NET

SULLANA, Peru - During the third week of June 2016, a woman, probably 23 weeks pregnant, from Sapillica (Ayabaca Province), bled profusely and got to be referred to the hospital in this city, where she apparently was stabilized then registered. But something became too fatal - around a week later, she died from hypovolemic shock.

Her reference paperwork seemed to follow all the protocol. So, it was not clear how her situation became risky, why she was registered and who the responsible in charge was .

The cases of pregnant, on-birth or on-puerperium (42 days after the birth)  women dying while they wait for, receive or received attention in health places across Piura region have similar developments: the woman passes some or all pre-natal controls, she goes for attention, suddenly a condition that personnel can't control breaks out (almost ever hemorrage or infection), then she dies.

Data use not to be available for having certainty of what happened up-to-the-minute, clinical records seem to vanish from archives  in some cases, personnel who prefers not to be identified assure.  Without a hard proof, it will never  possible to know whom the responsible is. Despite that, medical crews like to have their own conclusions.

Piura's regional Bureau of Health (DIRESA Piura as in Spanish) has suggested that almost all cases are caused to a woman who did not follow any protocol like attending to her controls on time, or having the prescription as it was set (many women were diagnoses with hypertension)

While Health personnel whispers references are but not attended on time if they reach a medical doctor or a gynecologist, people opine women who birth at a hospital, like Sullana's, die.

Officially, Health recognizes 33 deaths until December 31st, 2016.

In Piura region until July 2016,  one pregnant, on-birth or on-puerperium woman died per week. Checking out statistics since 2002, it means that the problem seems to be out of control for Health, although it's not the first crisis in their hands that had the same fate in the last three years neither.

That motivated such same July, they launched a pilot program in Sapillica to prevent more maternal deaths. The intervention implied to include local authorities and communitarian leaders. The result was outstanding: any decease since august's first week.

Those are statistics that DIRESA Piura managed internally in the beginning, updated June 31st, 2016, or 23rd epidemiologic week or the half of 2016. Meanwhile, the discussion likes to keep locked by Regional Committee of Maternal Mortality, managed by gynecologists.
